Why should you choose this subject?
Learning a language increases your confidence and communication skills.
Languages make you more employable. People who speak a language earn on average 20% more than those who don’t.
Aside from the obvious career benefits, the simple satisfaction of being able to understand and be understood in a foreign language offers a real sense of accomplishment, whilst helping to develop an understanding and acceptance of different ways of life.
It raises awareness of cultural diversity and promotes tolerance of people with a different lifestyle. 75% of the world’s population don’t speak any English at all, so learning an additional language gives you a unique selling point!
By studying a language in the senior phase, your self-confidence and literacy skills will improve and you will develop the ability to build new relationships, by becoming fully equipped to travel and communicate with native speakers of the language you are learning. Teaching methods used in the Modern Languages Faculty at GHS can ensure success in foreign language learning for all learners.
Some university/college courses state that a language is required for entry.
What skills will you learn?
Your S3 French/German course aims to give you an understanding of life in another country and to develop the ability to communicate in the language of that country, using the skills of talking, listening, reading & writing.

- Understanding the views of others.
By studying a language in the senior phase, you will be learning key skills that employers look for:
An analytical mind, good thought process, amazing memory capacity, cultural awareness, good communication and team working skills.

What careers are available?
Modern Languages open up many doors for future careers. As a result of increased activity in international business, there is a growing need for individuals who possess language skills. In short, job prospects will be very much enhanced by having the ability to communicate in another language. As well as jobs more commonly associated with language learning, like teaching and translating, languages can be helpful in a range of jobs, where contact with people from other countries might be necessary. There is a demand for people who can speak a language in a wide variety of areas, such as travel & tourism, engineering, finance, media, education, law, customer services, marketing, politics, journalism, pharmaceuticals and computer gaming. Language skills are increasingly important in a globalised economy.
Reality: A little language goes a long way, and most employers - as well as more than 30% of UK businesses - want people to have some conversational ability.
